Got a pair of worn-out jeans that hold a special place in your heart? Maybe they’re your favorite pair that finally gave out, or maybe they belonged to someone special. Either way, turning old denim into a cuddly teddy bear is not only a fun upcycle project but also a beautiful keepsake to treasure or gift.
Let’s turn those jeans into something adorable!
What You’ll Need:
An old pair of jeans (adult size gives you plenty of fabric)
A teddy bear sewing pattern (you can print one for free or trace an existing stuffed animal)
Scissors
Pins or clips
Needle and thread (or sewing machine)
Stuffing (polyfill, old pillow stuffing, or fabric scraps)
Buttons or safety eyes (optional, depending on who it’s for)
Fabric marker or chalk
Optional: ribbon, embroidery thread for the nose, and other embellishments
Step 1: Prepare Your Jeans
Cut along the seams to open the jeans up and lay the fabric flat. Focus on using the parts with the least wear—usually the upper legs and back panels. You can even mix light and dark denim for a patchwork-style bear.
Step 2: Cut Out the Pattern
Print and cut out your teddy bear pattern. Most free patterns will include pieces for the body, arms, legs, ears, and sometimes a belly panel for shaping. Lay the pattern pieces on the denim and trace around them with fabric chalk. Make sure to flip pieces for mirrored sides where needed.
Cut out all your denim pieces, keeping track of which part is which.
Step 3: Start Sewing the Pieces
Begin by sewing smaller parts first—usually the arms, legs, and ears. Fold each piece right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving the top open for turning and stuffing.
Once stitched, turn each piece right side out and stuff them firmly but not overly tight—you want your teddy to stay cuddly!
Step 4: Assemble the Body
Sew the body panels together, right sides facing in. Don’t forget to leave an opening for turning and stuffing later. Before closing it up, pin and sew in the stuffed arms and legs. Some patterns call for attaching them afterward, so follow the guide based on the pattern you’re using.
Turn the body right side out and stuff it nice and plump. Use small amounts of stuffing at a time to avoid lumps.
Step 5: Add the Head and Features
Sew the head pieces together, stuff, and attach to the body. Add the ears before closing up the head for a cleaner look.
Now for the personality—sew or glue on button eyes (only if it’s not for a small child), or use safety eyes. You can also embroider the eyes and nose with black or brown thread for a soft, vintage look.
Use embroidery floss or thread to create a little nose, mouth, or even add some decorative stitches.
Step 6: Final Touches
Stitch up the opening used for stuffing. You can add a ribbon around the neck, a heart patch on the chest, or little denim overalls for extra cuteness.
Tips:
Mix different shades of denim for a patchwork effect.
Save pocket pieces to turn into mini backpacks or pouches for your bear.
Add some dried lavender inside for a scented, calming teddy.
Personalize it with embroidery—initials, a name, or even a date.
And there you have it—a soft, lovable teddy bear made from something that once had its own story. It’s a cozy way to upcycle and a sweet way to remember something or someone.
