Want to transform last year’s Christmas cards into this year’s decoration, follow this tutorial over at Outside The Margins and you’ll be sitting back and sipping hot cocoa enjoying your new decoration in a flash.
If your Christmas card stash is anything like mine, you probably have a shoebox or two full of cards you “just can’t throw away.” Some have the sweetest handwritten notes, some are from people we don’t often see anymore, and some are just too pretty to bin. Instead of letting them gather dust, turn those sentimental little beauties into a festive Christmas banner you can actually enjoy every year.
This is one of those easy holiday crafts that feels wonderfully nostalgic. I swear, the moment I start sorting through old cards, I’m right back to when the kids were small, the dog would eat the wrapping paper, and my husband would lose the scissors for the tenth time. You know the vibe.
Plus, this project is perfect for women who love a good bit of upcycling without the fuss of a full-blown DIY marathon. A few snips, a bit of string, and suddenly your lounge looks like a cosy Christmas cottage.
What You’ll Need
- A mix of saved Christmas cards
• Scissors or a craft punch (circles, pennants, stars — whatever you fancy)
• Hole punch
• Length of twine, ribbon, yarn, or baker’s twine
• Optional: glitter, buttons, mini bells, lace trim or washi tape for extra cheer
How to Turn Christmas Cards Into a Banner
- Sort through your cards.
Pick the ones with attractive fronts, cute illustrations, or sentimental messages you want to keep on display. - Cut out your shapes.
You can go classic triangle bunting, or keep the card’s natural shape if the design is sweet enough. A circle punch is brilliant for keeping it fast and tidy. - Punch holes for hanging.
Two holes at the top corners of each piece is usually enough. If you’re using heavier cards, make the holes a little further in so they don’t tear. - Thread your twine.
Thread from the back so each piece naturally lays flat. You can knot between each card if you like spacers. - Add embellishments (optional).
If your inner glitter-queen is calling, now’s her moment. A tiny lace trim or a dusting of sparkle along the edges gives that vintage Christmas magic. - Hang it proudly.
Across a mantle, above a doorway, along a bookcase — anywhere you want a touch of old-fashioned festive charm.
