Sisters Enqi and Xin from Singapore opened their online shop Maki Squarepatch less than a year ago and already are seeing success worldwide. No doubt it’s due to their fun, fresh and imaginative line of one-of-a-kind clothing, bags, accessories, cushions, and dolls made from vintage fabrics.
I’m especially fond of their collection of “homely pals,” where every doll seems to be a sibling or cousin of Hoops & Yoyo (a Hallmark e-card reference), such as this Cheeky Belle ($65), whose product description is: “There are all sorts of joys that comes with having a heavy bottom. It keeps you grounded, not flussy in your thoughts, and happy to be who you are. This is one happy dolly to be who it is.” How adorable is that?!
And, if this kitty has your heart, then this story behind the store name most certainly will make you go awwww: “Maki Squarepatch is about taking discarded/untreasured items and giving it a new life. The unique concept was inspired by their cat (Maki Squarepatch!), who was found injured along the highway. It was hospitalized and brought home to a place filled with love and new kitty friends. With the same ideology, the motto behind Maki Squarepatch’s creations is to turn a person’s junk into another’s treasure.”
