How to make a recycled thread spool heart decoration

I love old wooden thread spools and the clever crafter Jean of the blog The Quilted Cupcake came up with this fun way to make a heart shaped thread spool decoration. I wonder if there is an easy way to do this but so you can still take the spools off?

    Maybe those round pieces of velcro would work to make the spools removable. Might need to reinforce the velcro adhesive first. I might have to try this myself.
