Aluminum Mini Trays

August 2, 2007 by Alissa

cantray.jpgUsing only a pair of scissors, Instructables member xavtek has been making these mini trays from aluminum cans for years. They’re meant to be used as ashtrays, but they function just as well as jewelry holders, soap dishes, spare change keepers, sorters for your beads, snaps and brads … the list goes on.

I’ve seen a few other similar trays, but I think the key to making one as perfect as this one is cutting as many petals as possible, as consistently as possible, as well as making the folds consistent. (You’ll see what I mean when you look at the tutorial.) My only suggestion? Throw a pair of protective gloves into the mix. Ouch!

Good question, Heather. I haven’t made one of these yet, but I am guessing that some of the edges are still exposed, so I wouldn’t recommend having these within the reach of small children or gnawing pets.

A Swoon for a Spoon: My Thoughts on Sadie Seasongoods’ Cameo Pendants

Okay, so let me just say, I’m obsessed with these spoon cameo pendants from Sadie Seasongoods! If you’re into unique jewelry that has a vintage vibe, but with a modern twist, then you have to check these out. Seriously, I’ve been wearing mine non-stop, and every time I do, someone asks where I got it from. It’s definitely become one of those signature pieces for me.

If you’re wondering what exactly a spoon cameo pendant is, let me explain. Sadie Seasongoods takes actual spoons and transforms them into these beautiful pendants. Yes, you read that right—spoons! They’re upcycled, which is such a cool idea, and the designs feature intricate cameos. The mix of the shiny metal and the detailed artwork gives it such a timeless, charming look. Plus, each one feels totally one-of-a-kind.

I don’t know about you, but I love accessories that can make a statement. These spoons have this vintage charm to them—think retro with a little bit of modern edge. The cameos on the spoons range from cute florals to more abstract patterns. Each pendant feels like a piece of art, and you can tell a lot of care went into crafting them. You can see the full tutorial here.
