13 Halloween Costumes You Can Make From Trash

October 22, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

Halloween Costumes from trash image

Let’s be honest: Halloween is officially out of control. I walked into a costume shop last week and nearly fainted at the $89 price tag for a pre-made “zombie bride” outfit. Like, I could buy groceries for a week… or pretend to be undead for a night? ? No thanks.

This year, I’m going full “green ghoul” and embracing the ultimate DIY challenge: Halloween costumes made from TRASH. Yup, junk. Recyclables. Stuff you were about to throw away. Not only does it save money, but it’s also better for the planet and gives you serious bragging rights.

Now, before you picture me walking around in a Hefty bag and calling it a day, hear me out — these trash-to-treasure costumes are clever, cool, and totally wearable. Some are laugh-out-loud funny (I’m looking at you, aluminum foil burrito), and others are so well-made, you’d never guess they were pieced together from soda bottles and cereal boxes.

We’ve done a few of these ourselves over the years — one Halloween, my kid was a LEGO brick made out of a cardboard box and some Solo cups, and I swear, people were stopping us in the street to take pictures. Another time we went full sci-fi with a jetpack made from 2L soda bottles and duct tape, and honestly, it looked better than the store-bought version.

Whether you’re crafting solo, wrangling your kids for a DIY costume night, or trying to organize a group costume for the whole fam, these recycled Halloween costumes are proof you don’t need a huge budget to make a huge impression. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about turning junk into something jaw-dropping.

So raid your recycling bin, grab some glue, and get ready to create something spooktacularly sustainable.

How fun (and oddly satisfying) were those ideas? I’m honestly blown away every year by how creative people get with items we usually just toss in the trash. Halloween should be about fun, not frantically refreshing your cart on Amazon or panic-buying glitter from the party store. These DIYs not only save money — they let your creativity shine and keep a few things out of the landfill in the process.

And don’t worry if you’re not super crafty — many of these projects are beginner-friendly, kid-approved, and hot glue-optional. (Though I do recommend having some duct tape on standby. It’s basically costume gold.)

So if you end up rocking one of these looks this year, send me a pic or tag me — I live for that kind of stuff.
