More about the book One Painting A Day from Quarry books:

One Painting A Day offers you an inspiring six-week course exploring the timeless traditions of observational painting through daily experience and routine.

This motivational guide is broken up into three parts to focus on the three major traditions of observational painting: still life, landscape, and portraiture. Each of the 42 daily exercises launches a small, immediate, and responsive painting based on a theme drawn from your daily experience. You will find suggestions on technique, approach, and materials for each day, while the “weekly lessons” explore a format or a rhythm for creating content, inspiring you to make the ordinary extraordinary as you create from every day experience. This beautiful collection of contemporary paintings serves as a workbook of ideas for aspiring artists, art students, professional designers, and art lovers alike.

Timothy Callaghan is a painter who lives and works in Cleveland, OH. He received an MFA from Kent State in 2005 and a BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1999. Presently, he is a visiting professor at Oberlin College and an adjunct faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Cuyahoga Community College. Callaghan has exhibited his work in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. Or did you study type or graphic design in college? Well, I did both and this book Creative Lettering: Techniques & Tips from Top Artists combines the two worlds for me! It is artistically creative yet full of solid technique. Lots of the type tutorials include images which is a fun way to combine fonts and illustration. I will most assuredly be trying lots of the techniques featured in Creative Lettering: Techniques & Tips from Top Artists. The first one I tried was from the awesome gallery in the back. I whipped up a Father’s day card made with cut letters from a book catalog which you can see over at Sweater Surgery.

More about the book from Lark Crafts:

” Hand-lettering techniques are a popular and visually dynamic way to add textual elements to crafts, from journals to mixed-media art. Sixteen accomplished contributors—including calligraphers, painters, collagists, card makers, fiber artists, and graphic designers—give their personal perspectives on lettering. They all offer their favorite tools, how they use them, their signature technique with step-by-step instructions and photos, and an alphabet sampler of their own font. Gorgeous gallery images of each contributor’s work are also included.

Making these little paper dogs was so easy with the awesome patterns. I simply printed out one of my favorites-the dachshund, I then followed the easy and clear directions to cut and fold him into a 3-d paper pup! I plan on coloring him using some technique I am sure to find in another art book that I want to try. So this guy is just a canvas waiting to get his “coat”.

So whether you are a dog lover or paper lover or both you will surely get a kick out of making all these little Paper Pups! By the way that is my next plan is to try another of the patterns with some recycled paper, maybe a fun page from a magazine or old art catalog.

More about the book from the publisher Lark Crafts:

“Cute crafts and adorable dogs—what could be more irresistible? From a Golden Retriever and French Bulldog to the beloved mutt, these 35 paper pups are appealing and fun to create. They’re made using kirigami, an art similar to origami: just photocopy the full-size templates and follow the simple steps to transform a flat shape into a dimensional animal! In addition to the dogs, accessories include a fire hydrant, doghouse, and a collection of collars to adorn your paper pet.

Hiroshi Hayakawa is a professor of drawing and mixed-media photography at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He earned BFAs in Photography and Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design, as well as his MFA in Photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Hiroshi began making kirigami animal sculptures in the mid-’90s when he was asked to create table decorations for a Chinese New Year’s party. The Sherrie Gallerie in Columbus, OH represents Hiroshi’s photography. He lives in Columbus.”
