Emiko and Shana of “Accessorize With Toys” at Maker Faire

Emiko and Shana have hit upon a great idea! They host workshops called “Accessorize with Toys” where they bring all sorts of recycled toys and everything you need to make jewelry and small sculptures to parties and eco-events.

Check out their program here and their blog here. as well as Emiko’s website and Shana’s Web site. Both packed full of beautiful designs! I would also like to share one of their great sources for recycled stuff-it’s called SCRAP -Scrounger’s Center for Reusable Art Parts. Thanks for a super fun time! I made a bracelet from Legos and computer keys. It makes me giggle because one object is from my childhood and the other is part of my everyday life now.

Copy paper boxes recycled into pretty storage

I use copy paper boxes to organize all sorts of my craft supplies and holiday decorations. But I never thought of trying to make them pretty. Well reader Kathleen sent in a link to her blog Beyond A Mom where she posted how she turned these not so attractive boxes into clean and sleek kid toy organization.

OK this may be obvious but all you need to do is grab a rock and paint it using the fun tutorial found over at Kaboose. Now “recycling” a rock is well, I suppose a bit of a stretch here but after St. Patrick’s Day is over you can “recycle” the rock back to your garden or wherever you got it from. See the twist here?

Book Review: Steampunkery by Christi Friesen

OK you may be asking yourself why is this book review of Steampunkery in the Recycled Crafts section? I’ll tell you. One of the cool aspects of the Steampunk style is the reuse and recycling of old elements in new ways. It’s one of my favorite parts about the Steampunk style, other than the “industrial” style it incorporates. Such as the case with all the really cool tiny gears and bits used in making the projects in this book. Christi writes in such a fun way it is such a joy to read her excellent directions along with the great photos. A lot of the projects incorporate a real or fictitious character that expresses so much emotion and cuteness you will love making these designs. Grab a copy of the book Steampunkery for wonderful tutorials or if you are just in need of all those recycled little watch parts and things to use in your own creations pop on over to her site CFOriginals to load up!

To see one of the projects from the book I had an opportunity to make in a class with Christi at CHA and the finished necklace tutorial pop on over here. It also includes a bit of a recycled soda can punched into a cute set of wings.

Listia, a cool auction site that is based on swapping not money

I want to thank reader Nancy for sending this site suggestion in! This is a screen shot of her auction over at Listia. Listia is a place where you get credits by setting up auctions to swap for other credits to “buy” stuff from other people. So you can post stuff you want to get rid of (recycle) and use the credits to get stuff you want! How cool is that?

Kunin felt and all Kunin products are made from Eco-fi, high-quality polyester fiber made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles! Can you believe that! I had no idea. Kunin felt is a staple in so many adult and kid crafts, now it makes me feel so happy to know it is so eco-friendly! To see more pictures from these two big craft shows pop over here, here and here.
