Call to Artists!
Presenting the second Mend donation project, “The Altered Toy Project”. Mend is a non-profit educational arts organization, located in Boise, Idaho USA. As an organization, we are interested in exploring the potential of hand made objects. Through this project, we hope to expand awareness of the importance of craft, improve quality of life for those in need and provide an organized opportunity to give back. Keeping with current trends towards green projects, we are inviting you to reuse existing toys, in the creation of new toys. All contributing artist/craftspeople will be part of Mend’s donation to the Children’s Home at the Warm Springs Counseling Center in Boise, Idaho. We welcome all artists and crafts people to join this project. Your toy will be a part of two group fundraiser shows and possibly included in a surprise publication. Recycled Art Fridge

Do you have an old fridge sitting in the garage waiting to be recycled? Here’s your chance to transform it into a work of art. The ENERGY STAR Recycle My Old Fridge campaign is seeking entries for an upcoming art exhibition at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Submit photos of your work by July 15 to be considered for the exhibit. Read complete details and rules from the official website. (Even if you don’t submit a fridge, be sure to view the exhibit the last week of August if you’re in the D.C. area.)

Recycle Santa Fe Festival

The 2007 Recycle Santa Fe Festival is happening this weekend, and if the photos on its website are any indication, it’s sure to be a fun and artsy time. Here are the basics:

November 16-18, 2007

Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Junk to Funk Fashion Show

The submission deadline has passed for the second annual Junk to Funk fashion show in Portland, but you can still observe the recycled fashion action by attending the event. It’s set for Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Wonder Ballroom. All ticket sales will benefit Orlo, a nonprofit organization using the creative arts to explore environmental issues.

Maker Faire Swap-O-Rama-Rama

The renowned Maker Faire Oct. 20-21 in Austin is offering plenty of crafty and geeky demos along with hands-on make-it-take-projects. What may be a highlight for those interested in recycled goods is the free Swap-O-Rama-Rama. The Maker Faire site describes the event as such:

“Get rid of your tired clothes and make them new by joining in the communal process of creative reuse at Swap-o-Rama-Rama, the world’s largest clothing swap and creativity workshop. Get hands-on and experience how much more fun it is to be a creator than a consumer. Lean to sew with the help of local designers. Modify and transform clothing through artist-led workshops. Silkscreen your garments with fresh original designs. All materials for creativity are provided. Take away as much clothing as you can carry! It’s all free: a Maker Faire ticket plus any size bag of unwanted (clean) clothes admits you to this textile paradise.”

Bellingham Recycled Art Show

Here’s another show for folks in the Pacific Northwest …

The sixth annual 2007 RE Art Recycled Art Exhibition will take place Oct. 5-27 in three locations in Bellingham, Wash. The Allied Arts of Whatcom County Gallery will feature the work of professional and semi-professional artists. The RE Store gallery will focus on art submitted from the young people. And the W.W.U. Viking Gallery will show pieces from higher education students (Western Washington University, Whatcom Community College, Bellingham Technical College and Skagit Community College) with an emphasis on both art and industrial design. There’s room for fashion, too! A Haute Trash Fashion Show runway performance will take place Oct. 20.

According to the site, “Submitted work may be reasonably considered â€œrecycled artâ€ if it is entirely, or primarily, composed of material(s) that would have otherwise been disposed into the waste streams. This can also include fashion apparel items and accessories, as well as functional items that fall into the realm of industrial design.” Deadline for submission is Sept. 21.

Boise Recycled Art Show

If you’re in the Boise area, be sure to catch the first-ever Second Chance Recyclable Art Show, an exhibition and auction of art created from recycled materials, scheduled to take place in downtown Boise’s Linen District September 22-29.

A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded at the end of the exhibition to the piece determined “Best of Show” by a panel of judges after an exhibition and silent auction. Additional non-cash awards will be given to first, second and third place winners in three separate categories and age groups.

Tammy Jones of HGTV.com approached the world-famous Highway 127 Corridor Sale with crafting in mind, and came up with some unique creations.

“The key to yard sale crafting is to try to envision an object’s potential — brightened with a fresh coat of paint, adorned with fringe or beaded trim, glued to other items, or simply as a shape (rather than a true object) that could be reborn to serve another purpose,” Tammy writes.

Recycled Crafts Teachers Wanted

San Francisco-based Made from Scrap isn’t set to launch until mid-September, but its website has definitely caught my interest (as well as a desire to live remotely close to San Francisco). The workshop warehouse lists a handful of hands-on class possibilities, including turning plastic bags into kites and handbags, computer chips into magnets and jeans into wallets.

For now, the workshop slate is wide open: Made from Scrap is looking for people to not only enroll in but also teach recycled crafts. Visit www.madefromscrap.org, where you can sign up for the newsletter, subscribe to the RSS feed and apply to become a teacher.

Magpie Recraft Fair

This weekend isn’t yet over, but it’s not too early to start planning for the next, which should be a good one for anyone in the Boston area: It’s the first-ever Recraft Fair, which features an afternoon of recycled craft vendors, live music and free hands-on craftivities (read: decorate reusable grocery bags and enjoy “freestyle” recycled crafting).

Quoth the Raven

Artist Mark Orr of Scavenger Art repurposes an interesting family of items — billiard balls, shutters, stair balusters, wooden shoe forms and more — into striking one-of-a-kind artworks. Take this “Raven on 8 Ball,” for instance, made of carved and painted wood, a vintage key and a billiard ball. The artist describes his work as “whimsical sculpture and art furniture,” but this ain’t your grandma’s whimsy! Maybe it’s the fact that he incorporates the jet-black raven into so many of his works that his folk art evokes a timeless appeal. Visit his website to learn about how the life-long artist stumbled upon the art of salvaging.

Recycled Barbie and Friends

Up for an indie recycling art show?

San Francisco’s 5th Annual Altered Barbie Show, “Out of the Box: Reclaiming and Recycling Barbie,” features 75 artists and vendors celebrating Barbie’s (and Ken’s and Skipper’s) second life. The art show, which runs Aug. 1-19 at Age Song (580 Hayes St. at Laguna in San Francisco) and Market Street Gallery (1554 Market Street between Van Ness & Franklin), will feature mixed-media, painting, printmaking, photography, quilts, 3-D Barbies, video, performance and film.

Kicking off the show is the Gala Reception & Barbie Ball the evening of Aug. 2 at Age Song. Guests are asked to come dressed as your favorite Barbie and Ken. Etsy Trashion Trunk Show

The new Etsy Trashion Street Team, made up of more than 70 artists from around the world, will present a Trashion Trunk Show 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 27, at Etsy Labs in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The goal of the Etsy Trashion Team is to visualize beauty in unconventional objects and materials. Their members fabricate art, jewelry, fashion and objects for the home from used, thrown-out and found elements. The founders of the team say, “Trashion is a philosophy and an ethic. It encompasses environmentalism and innovation, and respects the human creative and healing potential. Making traditional objects out of recycled or upcycled materials can be trashion. Making avant-garde fashion out of cast-offs or junk can be trashion.”

In preparation for the trunk show, the team has opened an Etsy shop, where a couple of dozen items, such as the recycled bottlecap button and denim flower barrette (shown, by dismantled), can be found.
